The First 24 Hours

When the world feels like it has stopped, just focus on one step at a time. Use this checklist to guide you through the immediate practicalities.

1. Immediate Steps (First few hours)

Verify the death

If at home (expected), call 111 or GP. If unexpected, call 999. If in hospital, staff will handle this.

Obtain Medical Certificate (MCCD)

You need this from the GP or Hospital Bereavement Office to register the death.

Call a Funeral Director

They can bring your loved one into their care immediately. You do not need the death certificate yet.

2. Registering the Death (Within 5 days)

Tip: Buy extra copies of the Death Certificate (approx £11 each). You will need them for banks and insurance.
Gather Documents

Take the Medical Certificate (MCCD). If available: Birth Certificate, Marriage Certificate, NHS Card.

Give “Green Form” to Funeral Director

The registrar gives you this. It allows the funeral to proceed.

3. Who to Inform

Use “Tell Us Once” Service

The registrar will give you a reference number. This informs DWP, Passport Office, and DVLA in one go.

Employer / School
Banks & Mortgage Provider
Utility Companies

Once the paperwork is done, take a breath. We are here when you are ready to plan the gathering.
